The Annual East Africa Philanthropy Conference is the signature philanthropy event in the region hosted by the East Africa Philanthropy Network, a voluntary membership organization that draws its membership from local charitable trusts, foundations, grant making and non-grant making organizations in East Africa with the primary aim of promoting philanthropy. The Conference is a gathering of over 300 practitioners and philanthropic organizations in the region. It provides a platform for sharing experiences, collective reflection, as well as the curation and development of philanthropic and social tools and investment practices for the continent’s people and partners.   A committee made up of EAPN members, partners and stakeholders to conceptualize, vision and plan, including determining the conference theme, agenda and selecting abstracts that inform the program organizes this conference.

The 8th East Africa Philanthropy Conference is an in-person event aimed at spurring philanthropy actors towards engaging actionable tools to build a resilient sector by aligning to the changes inherent and unanticipated in the ecosystem. It also aims at ensuring relevance through establishing collaborations that embrace the new demands of philanthropy while creating an environment for philanthropy to thrive. The three-day conference will provide industry players and practitioners an opportunity to unpack the broader theme dedicating each day to two sub-themes.

Conference thematic areas

The discussions at the conference will center on how African philanthropy can push the sector beyond conversations by specifically focusing on futuristic advancement, tireless generosity, and revitalizing philanthropy. The conference is expected to yield systems change frameworks for an agile and receptive practice of philanthropy in Africa. All abstracts must reflect consideration and engagement, of one or more of the crosscutting contexts of:
Thematic Area 1: Amplifying impact through a Vibrant Philanthropy
Thematic Area 1: Amplifying Impact through a Vibrant Philanthropy

Systems change is overdue in philanthropy. Systems transformation in development and specifically in philanthropy is inevitable, and thus should be embraced as our new normal. Whether it is trust-based philanthropy, participatory grant making, common data platforms, or calls for alternate reporting formats, important shifts are simultaneously underway and on a noticeably large scale. In East Africa, we amplify the work of philanthropy by building strong and vibrant communities where actors in this field work in concert through their strategic giving, investments and influence, to foster shared prosperity in the sector.

There are a number of notable returns evidenced from amplifying impact in philanthropy. Much like higher education and healthcare, philanthropy is a sector fundamentally “in service” to its constituents. Systems transformation leads to a vibrant sector, which in turn has direct impact on the quality of life in terms of well-being of the community; this could be reduced mortality rates, increased life expectancy and reduced burden of disease. All those could be achieved through philanthropy and adopting impact driven approaches. High impact giving, points to a global recognition by philanthropists of the need to apply systems transformation approaches to the sector. This ensures a more vibrant philanthropy sector and maximum return on Philanthropic Investment with unique social returns.” What are some examples of these returns?

Thematic Area 2: Enabling Environment: Evidence Approach towards a Stronger Ecosystem
Thematic Area 2: Enabling Environment: Evidence Approach to Strengthening the Ecosystem

EAPN places great importance on creating an environment that supports and enables philanthropy, a priority that has garnered the interest of our members and partners in recent years. The Evidence-based Enabling Environment (EE) evaluates various aspects of the philanthropy sector, including the legal infrastructure, regulatory framework, and public support. It also considers how policy and sector services are integrated in practice, while seeking to strike a balance between ease of doing business and broader nonprofit sector benefits, between regulatory framework and impact on social services, and between de jure laws and de facto practical implementation.

Through this session, actors will engage in developing concrete action plans to complement the mapping exercises carried out on the continent, ensure that the enabling and support environments are backed by evidence drawn from data, perspectives and lived experiences, practices and a clear understanding of the present challenges for moving forward with opportunities in the future.

Thematic Area 3: Untiring Generosity through Challenging Times
Thematic Area 3: Untiring Generosity through Challenging Times

We live in a time of increasing social and economic challenges. Amid recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic and the looming global economic downturn, various reports have been published on topical issues such as, Local Resource Mobilization, Mapping Philanthropy Support Actors and Emerging Vehicles of Giving. These reports provide a roadmap, evidence and information to help philanthropists navigate these uncertain times.

Today, as we survey current challenges and those that lie ahead, we see a broad array of social, financial and environmental crises that are poised to test our sense of shared values and societal framework. This session looks to provide participants the opportunity to challenge the status quo and deliberate on solutions for the challenges we currently face. Addressing these problems requires a great deal of thoughtfulness, tenacity, and commitment; even the most seasoned philanthropists need to pause, reflect, and ensure that their giving strategies reflect the seismic shifts around the world. This requires a broad awareness of big-picture issues, as well as a willingness to seek out the interconnectedness of global challenges. No matter the issue, or the method—be it through public-private partnerships, impact investing, coalitions, collaboration or more traditional philanthropy models—there are opportunities to realign resources with what is needed in today’s environment.

This session will present a series of considerations and strategies for thoughtful and effective giving in these challenging times. Some questions to respond to include; How would we conduct evaluations to establish and strengthen provisions for giving, collaboration, and leadership development? How do we incorporate challenges of climate change in our solutions?

How can our movements and the people that drive them continue to work towards deeper solidarity as we heal from inter and intra community conflicts?

Thematic Area 4: Revitalizing & Re-imagining the future: Building on People Power
Thematic Area 4: Revitalizing & Re-imagining the future: Building on People Power

Over the past few years, there have been moments of tremendous setbacks towards philanthropic development but also growth. We have organized various convening’s across the region to innovate in order to circumvent our complex context. While re-imagining transformations in the sector, we envision creating actionable paths in areas such as community philanthropy, climate change, technology, data etc.

We will also unpack the feminist agenda, which is a powerful movement aimed towards galvanizing transformative action for gender equality, women’s empowerment and women’s human rights. As deliberations and interventions on strengthening the equality movement continue to take center stage across the continent, we catch a glimpse into the future philanthropic ecosystem in Africa and the world at large, and what it means for the movement. How are philanthropy players navigating multiple changes to sustain and rebuild our collectives amidst crises such as collapsing civic spaces, reneged rights, government attacks, political conflict and global inflation among others?

How are different players in the sector challenging the siloing? In addition, how are they confronting the indiscriminate attack on community philanthropy through limiting their ability to participate in creating their own solution of stakeholders’ freedoms to organize, expression and bodily autonomy and political pluralism.

How do we fund movements like those that we care for them to win? Moreover, how are we using the current challenging moments as opportunities to reignite movement-inspired debates that shift political paradigms to foster knowledge sharing across movements; thus catalyzing radical shifts in how we work? How do we secure and consolidate our collective gains?
